Periodical cicadas spend the majority of their lives underground. About 99% of their lives, to be exact. They remain in the soil as immature insects until they are finally mature enough in either 13 or 17 years to come out of the soil. They only do this so that they can mate, lay eggs, and then die. They come up out of the soil in a synchronous mass emergence. Because the soil has to be a specific temperature for them to emerge, they do it all at the same time! And then they sing for ladies. *smile*

I wanted this extra special friend to have an extra special stone. I paired it with a purple flashed covellite in quartz gemstone. The teardrop shaped stone looks like a clear quartz but when in the sun will flash the most beautiful bright purple! These rarely seen stones are such a delight and worthy of a cicada friend.

The necklace is 20 inches long but is adjustable to make it shorter if you wish. This piece is made entirely of solid sterling silver. I carved his body and then gave him little decorative plates to mimic what he looks like in the wild. He is a little more than 3 inches wide himself.
